Write Quickly Using Freewriting
Touch typists have the advantage as professionals. Turning off the monitor and freewriting as fast you can through your rough drafts you should be able to type 40-50 words per minute. With practice you will be able to write articles fast – often in about ten minutes. No, these articles will not be perfect, but if you write 500 words in ten minutes that will leave you time to come back later and polish those words to perfection.
Write Quickly Without Using Backspace
Freewriting works best when you push forward and type a word or thought fresh rather than going back, erasing it, and typing it again. If you keep on writing you will not be constantly struggling to find your train of thought and get back in the flow. That is why it is important to turn off the monitor or close your eyes when writing. It is easier to ignore your mistakes when you cannot see them.
After you finish your first draft you can go back and run a spell check. You will find that much of your writing is lucid and coherent and you only need to make minor corrections for flow. It is the interruptions and second guessing that often creates writer’s block. Learn to forget your backspace key in order to write articles fast.
Write Quickly with Substitutions
Do you ever get stuck trying to think of the right word or statistic? Instead of beating yourself up in a rough draft, or worse opening a new window to fact check, just stick the wrong word in place and plan to fix it when you polish. When trying to write articles fast, you must maintain pressure on yourself to keep typing during your rough drafts.
Let the wrong words sit for now and hold space for the right ones later. XXX is a very convenient substitute because it will stick out when you reread your work.
