Make Money While You’re in College
The folks at College Startup came up with a great idea. They then took this idea and created a valuable resource that anyone with an internet connection can tap into. At their site, you will find practical advice, sound business ideas, and proven examples of how to make some extra cash while studying for mid-term exams.
In my eight plus years of college, I never once gave it a thought to try to start a business. I was under the influence of conventional wisdom that said (among other things):
- You can’t start a business and go to college at the same time.
- You must finish school and then find a job working for someone else.
- Starting a business takes lots of money, finding office space, hiring people.
- No one will take you seriously if you’re just in college.
- It’s too risky.
- You’re too young.
- Only people with business degrees can start companies.
How to Make Money Writing Online Articles
Freelance writers are always looking for new opportunities and new markets for their work, and the Internet has provided a wealth of opportunities. There is also certainly money to be made writing online articles, just don’t quit your day job. In the month or so that I have been writing articles for online publication I have earned around $80. This is no giant sum, but those looking for a quick payday are missing the point. Even a small payment allows writers to accomplish something most have never achieved before: being paid for something we would do for free.
For a writer, being paid anything for your work is a victory. Magazines only seem to care about celebrity gossip, newspapers are going out of business every day, and even most published novelists in America are never able to live solely off the income from their books. Therefore I am happy with what I’ve made so far, and while I hope to increase my earnings, my main goal is to improve my writing.
Make Money Writing Reviews: Review Stream or Ciao?
I have been actively writing reviews for Review Stream for the past two months or so. I’m happy to say that I have made some money writing reviews and have been paid by them. However, I’d like to find an alternative website which also pays for writing reviews. I have heard about Ciao! Initially, I thought that Ciao! was a survey site. I got it mixed up with Ciao Surveys. In fact, Ciao is another get-paid-to write reviews site. I have read many rave reviews about Ciao! that I decided to try it out for myself, to see if I can make some extra money there.
Here, I would like to compare the two review sites based on certain criterias, to find out which is the better one for me.

How to make money writing for the web
My company, Articulate Marketing, helps big tech companies communicate better about their products and services. A large part of my work is writing editorial-style content for websites. My credentials are my work for HP, Microsoft, eBay and others.
In the past couple of weeks, several people have asked me for advice about becoming a web copywriter, so here it is:
1. Learn to write well
The first thing is to become a good writer. You can become better by writing more and being mindful while you do it. This means writing at least 1,000 words a day. It also means constantly thinking about how to be a better writer as you do it. Several techniques have worked well for me:
- Look at good and bad copy on other people’s sites and analyse why it works or doesn’t work. This is also a good trick to get you started on a new assignment.
- Apply the techniques of other media, in particular newspaper journalism.
- Get an independent proofreader. Not only is this a time saver but it can save you from embarrassing typos. I work with Sarah Bee and, mainly, Fullproof. (But not for my blog – I’m too cheap!)
- Get a writer’s bookshelf. I recommend The Pyramid Principle, The Economist Style Guide, Writing to Deadline (also see my 10-minute summary of the book), Stephen King’s On Writing (yes, really!) and Strunk and White. Read and inwardly digest.
- There are some useful online reference sites too.
- Read good writing. Most web copy is non-fiction prose so I recommend reading good non-fiction prose. The New Yorker, The Economist, Slate, The Atlantic Monthly are all good places to start. Of course, read the trade papers of your target market too.
- Learn how to concentrate on writing.
- Do you want to know the short cut to really good writing that rings true for readers? Simple: good interviews with smart people translated into readable prose. That’s it. Learn how to interview someone.
- Read Bad Language. Yes, I know this is self-promotion but I have written hundreds of thousands of words about the kind of writing I do on this site. You can’t beat the price.
2. Know your subject
