Author One of my favorite ways to make extra money is to sell the excess from around my home. With fast growing kids, changing styles, and new life phases, it seems I always have an abundance of items that are no longer being used. The first place I look to sell these items is on Craigslist. In my opinion, unless you have something very valuable (that is shippable) Craigslist is the way to go.
There are no fees with Craigslist, meaning all the money you make is yours. You get to set your price. There is no gambling as to whether you will make any money. You set the price you want and hope it sells. If you list an item for auction on EBay there are a couple of bad scenarios that can happen. The price does not get bid high enough for you to make any money after the fees, or it doesn’t sell at all and you are still out the fees (meaning you just lost money). No worries when selling on Craigslist – if it doesn’t sell you are only out your time.
I have found that some things work better than others. Grouping like items together will help them sell better and more quickly. Do you have an entire wardrobe of boys 4t clothing? Rather than selling it one piece or outfit at a time, group all winter clothing together and all summer clothing together and sell it that way.
Take good pictures of the items you are selling. I believe that Craigslist will allow four photos, but I can never get more than one to load. I just say in the ad that I have more photos and to email me for them if interested. I have never had a problem selling anything by doing this, as long as I have one photo up. People can judge the condition fairly well and decide if it is worth pursuing. I know that I really dislike searching for something and not being able to see a picture of it.
Be very careful when selling on Craigslist. Sometimes strange people respond to my ads. There are a couple of ways I protect myself when selling items from my home. First, if I get even the slightest strange feeling from an initial email I just ignore the email. They do not have any of my contact information unless I reply to their email. Better to be safe than sorry in my book. Second, I will only schedule pickups when my husband is home and I make sure the person that is coming knows that my husband will be home. Third, I have the item waiting by the door, or if it is nice weather I will make an excuse to be outdoors with the item waiting on the buyer. Fourth, I keep the phone with me at all times when I am making a sale. Fifth, I only deal locally.
Unfortunately scams are running rampant on Craigslist. If someone contacts you from far away, even just another state, but especially if they are from another country just ignore them. If someone tries to pay you more than what you are asking for be very wary. I would ignore these offers too. If someone wants to have you ship the item, don’t do it. These are all typically scams. They offer to pay you more for your “time”, mail you a cashiers cheque (fake!) and have you ship the item. Only after you ship the item does the cashiers cheque bounce and you have created a major mess for yourself. Deal locally, in cash only and you will be fine.
If you need extra money, Craigslist is a great place to sell your unwanted items. If you haven’t tried it before, it is super easy and fast. Good luck!

My advice on how to make money on Craigslist is to figure out what you do well, what skills you have and what market you are in. Here are some ideas for things you can sell on Craigslist:
1. Used items that you already have. Look around you. Figure out what you don’t want anymore or really don’t need and post it on Craigslist for sale, To get an idea of what to charge look at some other listings to see approximate prices for similar items that are already posted on Craigslist.
2. Besides used items, maybe you already have a business. Think about doing some advertising with Craigslist. If you are a mechanic hook up with a landscaper who can plant your lawn while you fix his car! Bartering is one of the oldest forms of direct selling to one another – MINUS the dreaded “T” word. Just don’t tell Uncle Sam know I told you that!
4. Are you creative like our birdhouse maker? People like creative things. Even in a bad economy people still love and want to buy handmade, unique items. There will always be a market for things that are out of the norm. If you make unique jewelry, grow unique orchids, make awesome doghouses or build unique childrens furniture them yes – by all means try selling them on Craigslist! Maybe Craigslist will launch you into a whole new business and you wlll build up a clientele and establish a following!

A lot of you may know Craigslist as a place to go and chat on the Forums, or search for bargains and even perhaps to look for a job. Craigslist is a good place to visit online and do all those things. But did you know you could be making money fast online with Craigslist?
Back in the day when I was between jobs, I used Craigslist and Ebay to keep the wolf away from the door. It took a little effort, but we were able to pay our bills with the money I made from these two websites and even put some away for a rainy day.
Did I get filthy rich? No, not by any stretch of the imagination.
Can you do it? I see no reason you can’t! There are many others making money and I bet a lot of them are not technically inclined. Make Money With Free Stuff From Craigslist
First off, I went each morning when I got up and checked out the Free section to see if there was anything of value I could pick up. I checked this several times a day when I was at home or near a Wi Fi spot. In some communities, you’ll have competition for this free stuff, so you’d better be quick!
If I did find something I thought I could resell, I immediately would try and contact the people and let them know I wanted it. Many people will hold it for you if you’ll just let them know you want it.
I usually try to have a route to pick as many items up as I can. Once I’ve picked up a few items, I’ll then list them on Craiglist for sale! If I think a certain item has more value than what I can get off of Craigslist, then I’ll list it on ebay.
Sell Your Own Services On Craiglist and Make Money Fast
Chances are real good that you have at least one skill you can do better than a lot of people. Maybe it’s writing, or computer programming or perhaps you’re a whiz with Excel, QuickBooks or another computer program.
Whatever your skill, there is a Service section toward the bottom of the page on Craigslist. People list all types of services in this section. I’ve seen everything fro Computer Repair to Escort services advertised here.
I have a friend who writes from home. Over the last year, she has used the Services section to advertise her business and has built a nice customer base from it. Now she’s back logged and has plenty of work and makes a comfortable living doing it.
Another person I know who can make money fast on the side repairing computers. His only advertising is also in the Services section. Now days he has to turn business down because he can’t get to his Customers fast enough. He has built up a good referral base and rarely advertises on Craigslist any longer.
Buy Low, Sell High
Besides the free section on Craigslist, you can search the other categories and look for bargains. Take these bargains and either relist them on Craigslist at a markeup or sell them on Ebay.
When I was making money with Craigslist and Ebay, I would look these areas over good for a bargain. If I saw something way undervalued, I’d go and pick it up quick.
Many times people just need a quick buck or want to get rid of something fast. Sometimes, they just don’t know what they have.
I once bought a Ham Radio amplifier off of a woman on Craigslist for $25. I had no idea exactly how much it was really worth, but I knew it was worth more than $25!
The thing was heavy and she just had it laying around. She wasn’t even sure how she came about it.
I cleaned it up a little, took pictures of it and posted it on Ebay. I ran it for a 7 day auction and at the end, it fetched $311.97! Another time I bought an old beat up pickup on Craigslist for$325. It didn’t run but I thought I knew what the problem was. I towed it home, put a new distributer cap on it ($45), cleaned it up a little and sold it for $950 in the local paper a few days later.
One innovative man I saw posting on Craigslist was advertising that he would come and pick up any of your junk for free and haul it off. Of course, he would resell most of the stuff! When I called and asked him how that was working out, he told me it was a Goldmine!
“You wouldn’t believe what people throw away!” he said.
How’s that for thinking outside the box. People call HIM to come and get their stuff to sell!
Making money fast with Craigslist can be a golden opportunity for you if you need extra cash. There have been many people turning this into a full time income with just a little effort. There’s no reason you can’t do the same.
In some smaller cities, the opportunities may be fewer, but use your creative thinking to maximize your efforts in these areas. This way, you can build up a customer base of people that know you and will give you first picks of stuff they want to get rid of or sell. If they know they can call on you to buy something from them for a quick buck, you’ll be their go to guy when they need extra cash. This will allow you to make money fast with little effort!

Be very careful when searching the ads on Craigslist for homes to rent – because I was almost a victim of a big scam recently. And I’m not the only one.
Some of you know that I am visiting family in Wisconsin – and while here I decided to look around, out of curiosity, at some homes for rent. I love Las Vegas, but it’s a tough place to 
raise a child. So it doesn’t hurt to look around. While searching the Craigslist ads for homes for rent, I found one that looked extremely nice. I decided to drive by the home and get a better look at it, and then I contacted the person who made the ad to ask some questions. I received a reply right away – with the person asking me for details about myself. I then received this response back:
Hello Holly Mann.
Glad to hear from you,i got your application form filled and everything is okay by me. Myself and my Wife are very exited and willing to let you move in our house as soon as possible and we have conclude on accepting payment for the first month rent payment $900 including Utilities inside and a security deposit of $500 the total of $1,400 to move in as soon as you are ready.
The package containing the keys and documentations will be delivered to you withing 48 hours to you as soon as you are ready to move in to the house,
Here are the contents of the document.
1) Entrance and the rooms Keys
2)Paper/Permanent home form
3)The house documetary file.
4) Payment Receipt..
5) Full address and description of the home.

After receiving this strange response, I wrote back (thinking it was a scam) with this: Thank you for the E-mail. I am interested in the house – however I would like to meet with you personally to view it first. I’m in the area this week – today – until Friday. If you have the time to meet me at the home so I can see it -I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Then his response: The house is still available but presently I’m not around.. I did bid for a portion of petroleum land sometimes ago in West Africa and fortunately I won the bidding so I have to move quickly down to Africa to have my company set up because I will still have to rebid for it in the next 10 years.. I came over here with my wife.     Kramermi Chelle.
Then I wrote back, knowing fully it was in fact a scam, and said this (yes I totally lied about the husband and moving, but wanted to see how bad these guys really are):
Hi Kramer, I understand-thanks. I want the house and need to know where to send the money? I am struggling a little with money because my husband died six months ago and I am caring for my son alone. I just want to know if you can lower the rent price to 800 per month? Thanks so much and I am excited to move in! All our stuff is packed and we will need to drive for 30 hours to get from Nevada to the house. God bless you and I will wait to hear from you about the payment!
His most recent response was this: Hello Holly Mann. thanks for the eamil l have ACCEPT you to pay $800 for the rent.so now l will be geting the package ready for you as soon as you make the payment today.

I read other stories online about this and how common of a scam it has become. Others who scam Americans with this are sometimes more tactful – smarter, better writers, organize their crime better. I read another person’s story about a Craigslist rental scam and the person who posed as the home owner renting out their home, also acted as though he was a ministor. He said that he was a pastor and needed to go on a missions trip – and would like to correspond only by email, western union and sending the keys to the new renter.
Just be careful. The home I thought that was for rent was also online as a “for sale by owner” home – so I assumed they had given up on selling it and decided to rent it out. The scammers took the details of the home and home owner’s name from the “for sale by owner” website that the home was listed on. The actual name of the owner of the home I was interested in is Michelle Kramer – but the scammer didn’t know that and thought Kramer, Michelle (last then first name) meant this: Kramermi Chelle. Not so smart. In the end, I found the real owners home number and left her a message to make her aware of this situation. I saved the emails from the scammer and will do something about it this weekend. I may correspond with him again – not sure – just to leave him in suspense! lol..
