Here are five easy ways to get a little extra cash without having to work an extra job on the side.
1. Open bank accounts This works especially well at the beginning of each school year. Every bank in town wants student accounts. A student banking today will bank as an adult tomorrow, so many banks will offer cash between $50 and $100 just for getting started with them. These accounts often require no minimum balance and may be closed in six months or sooner. Just stay organized – nothing is worse than having debit cards and checks littering your dorm room as an easy target for thieves. Find the top few offers and go with those. It’s easy money that requires very little time and no investment.
2. Be a campus rep College students are one of the most targeted demographics for companies looking to sell their products. But they always are on the outside looking in. That’s where you come in. Many companies will hire you to promote their products and services on campus. As a student yourself, you know the best places to advertise and talk to students and companies pay you well for this information. With many of these jobs, you get free products and a base pay of $10 to $15 dollars an hour. Plus, most are flexible – you can work on your own time and report your hours at your own convenience. Companies may advertise for these positions on campus, but often they can be found through flyers on Facebook or on the company’s website. Now that you’ve finished finals and relaxed for a few days, you’re probably on the hunt for a job — but not just any job. Once classes resume in the fall you’re going to be busy, and you’ll need to free up your schedule again.
That’s right: you are looking for a summer job, one that you can work from now until the end of August, without having to quit on the spot and leave your employer hanging.
There are plenty of jobs you can take over the summer, but some of them cater to a student’s schedule better than others.
To help, Money College created a list of ideas for summer jobs. These are suggestions to get you started in your search. Of course, it is always possible to take a job at a restaurant or get an internship and inform your employer ahead of time that you will be attending school in the fall. And there are always local businesses looking for summer help.
1. Landscaping. Get your hands dirty this summer, along with your clothes and everything else you put your paws on. With a landscaping job, you will likely learn both about horticulture and elements of design. However, some may argue that landscaping can be a dangerous and physically taxing job — so enter at your own risk. The upside? Skilled, reliable landscapers can pull down better money when gardening and growing seasons go full tilt. Look for landscaping jobs here.
2. Nanny/Manny. It used to be that nannying jobs were only for the ladies. But in today’s world, mannies (or male nannies) are hot stuff. If you like kids, this is a great job. Sit in someone’s air-conditioned living room and build a fort with the little ones while watching episodes of “Blue’s Clues.” Nothing is better than acting like a kid again, other than getting paid to do it. And trust us on this: reliable, careful sitters who go the extra mile and teach kids arts and crafts, or a second language, can name their price in many urban areas and well-heeled college towns. 3. Construction. Even though there are more construction jobs for women than ever before, and despite the fact that I really hate to make gender distinctions, here is a job idea mainly directed toward able-bodied boys who want to work up a good sweat in the summer heat. The economy’s picking up, so expect the construction job market to be healthy, as this sector usually leads all others in recovery. Search for construction jobs.
4. Summer camp. Everyone’s seen a movie about a fun summer camp experience and it’s made you giddy to get a gig. My personal favorite is of course “Wet Hot American Summer” — but I would not encourage anyone to behave like the counselors in this flick. To be a good counselor, one should be responsible, self-motivated, and have a good rapport with kids. And contrary to what you might think, now’s an excellent time to look, as short-handed camps will want to hire help as soon as possible. Look for summer camp jobs.
5. Theme park. If you’ve ever seen “Adventureland,” this movie asserts that you can not only earn some quick cash working at an amusement park over the summer, but you can also move to New York and score with a love interest you meet at the park. I’m sure that could be true of any summer job, but c’mon: Working at an amusement park has to be like a party. I’m sure you have to really pay attention to what you’re doing, though: No falling asleep at the ferris wheel. That said, these jobs can extend beyond the seasonal demand if you find a park that, for example, does a costumed Halloween fest in the fall. Find a theme park job.
6. Tour guide. You can find tour guide jobs all over the world and in any niche. You could work as an architectural tour guide on a boat in Chicago, or as a white-water raft guide in Colorado — you probably just want to study up on any given topic. Studying the tour spot of you choice is a must, and you must have a knack for socializing with people and non-wavering attention to details (release forms, for example). Research tour guide jobs.
7. Events. This includes various jobs you can take over the summer — anywhere from working at a baseball stadium to an outdoor music venue. Depending on your area of preference, you have the opportunity to make money while attending something you love every day of the summer. Obviously, these jobs are popular, so if this is up your alley, get moving before the good jobs get snatched up. Find event jobs.
8. Sports & social club. Every city has a sport and social club — I know of at least two in Chicago, and I’ve worked for both. They were great summer jobs. I organized and handed out T-shirts to teams, kept score for games, and worked an all day relay race in one case. They even gave me some office work at one point. Some of my co-workers got to work on the beach all day, setting up volleyball nets and keeping score. Getting paid to be on the beach all day? Score is right. Just Google the name of your city with the terms “sports” and “social club,” you should dig up something. In many cases, the URL will be (your city name) sportandsocialclub.com, or (your city name) ssc.com. Check out the offerings in New York City, Orlando, Fla., Philadelphia, Austin, Tex. and Chicago.
9. Deckhand. You could look into deckhand positions for cruise lines, which would keep your traveling at all times. Or if you are looking for a position where you live on land and work on the boat, you can look into boat tour companies or a deckhand on a private yacht. Either way, expect to work really hard. If you don’t live by a body of water, I want to be entirely fair, so for you, my 9th suggestion is to look into work at a golf course. Here are some resources for both: Find jobs for deckhands. 10. Start your own business. There are a couple mentions on this list that would qualify under this suggestion as well, such as nanny work and landscaping (or other yard services). But some other ideas include pet care, car cleaning, tutoring, or selling items such as water, ice cream, and hand-held fans to people at beaches. (In some cases you may need a license to do this). 1. Sell all of your old textbooks for quick money
As soon as enrollment for courses begins my ads for the textbooks that I have to sale is going right up. Luckily I have been on the ball with selling my old textbooks so I only have a few books to get rid of. I plan on keeping my Labor Relations textbook because that’s probably the most interesting course I took last year. Other then that textbook everything else must go!
2. Apply for every scholarship/grant/bursary humanly possible
Part of the idea for this post was sparked by me finding my scholarship application on my table: nicely filled out and ready to hand in. No guarantee that I will receive any money but what do I have to lose by filling out a few forms? August until October is the most important time to keep an eye out for all forms of free money that college students can obtain. My scholarship application is ready and in early September I will be applying for my bursary. What form of tuition assistance will you try this college semester?
3. Stack up the hours at work
One month left for college students to start saving up aggressively before the school year begins. The last few weeks of August I plan on working as many shifts as possible in order to save up for the upcoming school year. This is especially helpful for all of the college students that do not work during the school year. I want as large of an emergency/entertainment fund as possible.
4. Find a job around your college campus
I’m still waiting for a decent job posting to open up around my college campus. If you can land a job on your college campus then you can start your college semester with the peace of mind that you will have a steady income until at least December. Jobs to look out for include: teaching assistant, administrative help, and anything in your department.

College students come in all shapes and sizes, and with different budgets. Some college students have plenty of money. Most students, however, need extra monthly cash for everyday expenses and miscellaneous extras not covered by scholarships, grants, financial aid, or parent assistance.
Start a Budget
It’s time to start budgeting. You don’t need any fancy software. A simple Excel spreadsheet will do — or even a handy-dandy notebook (sorry for the Blue’s Clues reference).
Write down your monthly expenses (car insurance, gas, regular spending, bills not covered by mom or dad, etc.) as well as your financial goals (an upcoming weekend getaway, a new car, an XBOX 360, whatever). Be specific.
Then, write down how much money you have coming in, whether it be from parent support, a current job, savings, etc. Determine exactly how much money you need to close the gap between what you will need (to match your expenses and goals) and how much you have coming in already.
Brainstorm Money-Making Ideas
At this point, most students simply start looking for a job. Before you do that, take some time to step back and look at the big picture. Brainstorm some money-making ideas. What are your interests? What are your strengths and weaknesses? For instance, your strengths may include special skills and/or knowledge in writing, web design, computer repair, landscaping, etc. Make a list of the things you are good at – and that you don’t mind doing.
Then ask yourself what needs (if any) you see in the marketplace. Understand that the economy is all about supply-and-demand. So, ask yourself…What can YOU supply that is in demand? Basically, you’re trying to match your strengths, talents, skills with the needs of the marketplace. This is how you need to think with respect to your major and your career. You might as well get in the habit now — starting even (if possible) in your freshman year of college.
Here’s an example…Just about every college student has a computer. If you’re good with computer trouble-shooting and repair, why not offer your services as an on-call computer troubleshooter and repair guy? You could go solo, partner with a couple other students, or approach a computer repair shop in the city or town — and offer to be their “go-to” guy on campus.
Another possibility is to offer to mow lawns, rake leaves, or shovel snow in residential neighborhoods surrounding the campus. Are you good with drywalling or deck building or basic carpentry? If so, consider offering those services to the residential neighborhoods. You could also baby sit, elder sit, or house sit.
Are you willing or able to become a clown, balloon artist, juggler, or performer? If so, you could entertain at kids’ birthday parties, church events, etc. or offer your services as a birthday delivery person.
The sky’s the limit. Keep brainstorming. Don’t limit yourself to simply getting a job, although that is also an option for you.
Great Jobs for College Students
If you choose the job route, head to the Career Center and look for paid internships that match your major and/or career interests. You should also inquire about the Federal Work-Study Program. Talk with a counselor in the Career Center. Let her help you through the job search process.
Next, look for jobs on campus or in the community that will allow you some time to study. Security officers, desk attendants, etc. are possibilities.
If all else fails, and you must grab a job that doesn’t excite you, there’s no shame in doing so. But don’t let yourself get mentally trapped in such a position. Do your best, learn what you can from it, and keep an eye out for other opportunities.
Making money is actually quite simple. As we’ve seen, it’s a process of establishing your needs and wants via a budget. This makes your goals clear. Then, brainstorm money-making possibilities — trying to match your strengths with the needs and wants of the marketplace. And take advantage of your university’s Career Services Center. If you’re leaving for college soon and you don’t have a checking account opened up, you should start thinking about it now. You’ll definitely need a place to stash the little cash that you’ll have during your college career.
Be aware, not all checking accounts are free, and some of them have hidden fees; those are the ones you want to stay away from. Below are four reviews of checking accounts that are worth your time to consider opening up before you leave for school.
ING Electric Orange Checking Account
If you missed my article about the ING products, go checkout my electric orange checking and orange savings account review. This is a great checking account for college students. You can do all of your banking online, which is definitely a benefit for college students, and there are absolutely NO fees associated with it. Plus, you’ll earn about 1.75% on your money while you’re at it. The only down fall to it is that you need to send in checks through the mail for deposit. You may need to have a second checking account in order to transfer money back and forth to it.
The Campus Edge Checking Account by Bank of America
Bank of America has some good financial products. This is the account that I had while I was in school at the University of Florida. There are no fees, and all you need is $25.00 for an initial deposit to open up the account. After that, there is no minimum balance. BOA will also enroll you for free into their “keep the change” program which rounds your purchase up to the nearest dollar and puts the change into a separate savings account for you. They’ll also match give you a 100% contribution match for the first three months. This could make it easier for you to balance your check book, because all of your purchases will be rounded to the nearest dollar, making it easier to figure out your balance. Convenience is the biggest advantage to a Bank of America checking account. Bank of America has a ton of branches, especially in the Southeast, so an ATM is never hard to find.
Washington Mutual Checking Account
Washington Mutual became known for its free checking account. It doesn’t just apply to college students, anyone can open one with with no minimum balances. I had this checking account when I was in high school and a portion of my time in college. Washington Mutual has good customer service, and it truly is a no-fee checking account. They’ll give you free, standard-image checks for life, and they won’t charge you any fees for using any ATM in the world. The ATM operator might charge you a fee, but WAMU never will. WAMU also has a sweet 3.75% online savings account that you can hook up to your checking account and stash away an emergency fund or birthday money from gram and gramps. Ahh yes, I remember those days when grandparents sent me money. Ironically, I think it stopped when I needed it the most as a poor college kid.
Charles Schwab Checking Account
You get 2.0% interest from a checking account! There are no minimums, no fees, free online bill pay, and they’ll reimburse you for any ATM fees. It also has overdraft protection and it’s FDIC insured. You’ll also get a free brokerage account to start doing some investing while you’re in college.
Open a Student Checking Account
So, get on it. Go and check out these checking accounts. Believe me, sticking your money under your dorm bed won’t work. Either your roommate or your roommate’s friends will end up stealing it. Watch out with your debit card, though. It’s so easy to swipe that thing. Make sure you set up a written budget for the month, and take out cash for items like entertainment and food.
