Many personal finance blogs write about ways to make more money. The problem is– how many of these ways to make money are creative? Not that creativity is the deciding factor in making extra money. It just helps.
I asked my readers last week as to what some of the most creative ways they made money were. Some readers chose to discuss ways to make easy money while other jobs involved more hours of work than I want to ever think about. I’ve compiled all of the answers and attached them below along with my thoughts.
Daniel played free cell for money. Think of all of the people that play free cell all day for fun. Daniel was able to figure out a way to get paid to do this.
20s Money used to sell air heads candy to classmates in high school. Looks like some readers were entrepreneurs at an early age. In a rather funny note, I tried selling bubble gum in grade 5. I would get my parents to buy me a whole tub and I would bring it to school to sell to my class mates. This worked well until the teachers found out. I guess selling stuff in grade 5 is not such a hot idea.
Sahaiya shared their opinion as part of a focus group. I’ve always heard of these focus groups but have never met anyone that has been apart of one. We all love to speak our minds, so why not get paid for it?
Donna used to sell video game saves. There truly is a market for everything. Some people either find a game too difficult or are too lazy to finish it so they pay someone for this service.
Financial Samurai teaches tennis for $50 an hour. Not creative but getting paid that kind of money do play a sport you enjoy and catch a workout at the same time is alright with me.
Youngandthrifty sold beaded necklaces to younger sisters. That’s what older siblings are for.
Maxwell worked as a product tester. At a $100 per test, you really can’t go wrong with this creative way of making money. I would love to be a beer or pizza tester.

Probably the MOST creative thing was starting my own shaved ice business. In 1992, I did a little research, found some suppliers, built an 8×12 building, had it wired properly, installed shelving, sliding windows, a bathroom, a three compartment sink, and a hot water heater. To reduce material expenses, purchase cheap reproductions of famous portraits and deface them. “Rip†videos off of Youtube, edit them in an interesting way and set it to novelty music that is now in the public domain. Go to an antique shop in Ohio, purchase something technologically obsolete and put it in a gallery.
8. Remember Ed Hopper’s tactics?
You do a sketch of someone’s house, and then try to convince the occupants of the house to pay you to do a full painting of their home.
Why the hell would you want a painting of your house, within your house? That’s another discussion entirely. What Hopper was doing is in the same realm as the shoe shiners in Chicago. You find someone, perform a task for them that they did not ask you to perform, and persuade them to pay you for it (pretty sweet, huh?).
9. Play to your strengths
Are you a musician? Provide the soundtracks for the films other art students are making. Charge them. Are you a photographer? Document other students’ work. Charge them. There’s got to be some unique talent you posses that other students would be willing to pay you for.

1. Do freelance work
Felice Premeau Devine left her lucrative, full-time job two years ago to raise her son. In the interim, she’s picked up writing and editing freelance work and started a blog, where she is able to earn a little cash from advertising.

Presidential dollar errors can be worth $50 to $5,000 each; uncirculated state quarters can sell from $10 to $50 per roll; and rare error coins can value up to $35,000.

“The Internet has so many options for saving money, getting something for free, winning a prize or earning money from home,” Limauge says. “You just need to find those resources that offer helpful information and point you in the right direction to get you started and keep you motivated.”
6. Give your opinion — and get paid
Linda Childers, a California-based freelance writer, says many of her friends participate in focus groups. Contributing an hour of your time can earn you up to $100, sometimes more. 7. Sell your junk
Terri Jay earns $2,000 – $3,000 per month just by selling junk. Direct selling is one of the easiest ways to earn some extra cash, especially if you sell products you love. Avon, for example, allows you start your own business for $10 — your take home depends on your efforts. Some full-time representatives earn six-figure salaries, others own licensed Avon Beauty Centers and many just sell Avon part time around their family’s schedules.
Haizel MacIntyre started her Avon business in June of 2008 to earn supplemental income to her full-time job when her husband was laid off. Since joining Avon, MacIntyre averages $1,800 a month in sales and her husband is helping her run the business. Her Avon earnings help pay the bills, provide extras for her three kids and she is hoping to earn enough to put towards her college tuition when she goes back to school to get her Masters in Social Work.
9. Be a secret shopper
Keen eyes for detail as well as a good memory are really all that it takes to succeed as a secret shopper, says Zippy Sandler, who has been mystery shopping for about 13 years. After registering with a secret shopping company, you are paid to basically go undercover and report on a company’s operation from the customer point of view.
Sandler decided to start secret shopping not only to earn money eating, traveling and shopping, but also to learn customer service skills to pass along to the employees she managed at a retail store. Depending on the clients she is shopping for, Sandler says she has earned everywhere from $100 to $2,000 per month.
10. Sell your photos to stock agencies
It doesn’t matter if you’re a hobbyist, an amateur or a seasoned photographer – anyone can submit their photos to stock photo agencies like Shutterstock.com. If your images are accepted, they will be available for download by subscribers. Each time someone downloads your photos, you get 25 cents.
