How to make some extra money without taking a second job

There are several reasons you might want to make extra money. You might want to beef up a savings account, or put money toward an important goal, or it could be that you are tired of stretching dollars quite so far, or that they’re not quite as elastic as you need them to be. Being as frugal as you can sometimes just doesn’t do it.

Whatever the reason, if you’re looking for a way to make a little extra money, there are many, many ways of doing it.

The place to start is with thinking about what you can do and what you enjoy doing. If you can write, then write. If you enjoy making and selling crafts, by all means, do it. If you want to raise tomatoes for sale, go ahead. Get into vermiculture. Guide someone on a hiking trip. Make web pages. Decorate wedding cakes.

There are almost as many ways to make extra money as there are people who want to do it.

Working, even if it’s just being frugal with what you already have, is an inevitable part of life. To be able to choose the work you do is a great privilege, so take your time and think about it carefully.

Here are a few ideas; there are more in the links at the right.

Online Surveys
They don’t take much time; you can usually take them at your convenience; and they provide a small, but interesting array of incentives and checks and cash, anywhere from two to thirty dollars. The key to making money on surveys is taking a lot of them.

Here are a few to get you started. Go to any search engine and type in “surveys for cash” or something similar and you’ll soon find more surveys than you ever want to do! You might want to sign up for a free email account like Hotmail to use just for this. You’ll need to remember to keep an eye on it daily, because some surveys expire quickly and some are paying only for the first few hundred responders.

You won’t get rich from them, but a few dollars here and there add up, especially if you’re conscientious and committed to it.

Rewards Programs
In reality, these programs take a lot of time investment for a small return, but if you find yourself with a little time and an internet connection, why not? You can earn gift certificates to chain stores like Target and Red Lobster and even grocery stores are getting into the act. (You can also earn real cash money.) Go to a search engine and type in “rewards programs.”

Recycling
Talk a stroll down almost any highway in America and you will find anything from aluminum cans to clothing to tools and more. Carry a plastic bag or two and dump all the interesting stuff together until you can sort it out. It’s not only fun, it’s profitable. Sell the cans and bottles and other recyclables you find, and have a garage sale with the other things.

Typing
Put up some ads at a local college or in the newspaper if you’re a decent typist or if you’re willing to spend time becoming one. Many students as well as faculty are willing to pay for someone to type up reports of various kinds. ASK if they want light proofreading also, and charge a little extra for that.

This is hardly even the tip of the iceberg – there are many other ideas on how to make extra money without “having a job.”

Administrative assistant
Also known as virtual assistants, home-based administrative assistants use office experience and computer skills as support personnel. Many skills easily transition into this position which offers many part-time and temporary opportunities.

Advertising sales agent
It’s said that Americans are exposed to more than 3,000 ad messages a day. Advertising sales representatives sell or solicit advertising space in print and online publications, custom-made signs, or TV and radio advertising spots.

Computer software engineer
Computer software engineers are projected to be one of the fastest-growing occupations over the 2002-2012 period. Duties include design, development, testing and evaluation of computer software, and continual training is suggested for the quickly evolving industry.

Corporate event planner
Employed by a private company rather than a hotel or convention facility, a corporate event planner coordinates staff activities including group meetings, client presentations, special events, conventions and travel.

Copy editor
Copy editors mostly review and edit a writer’s copy for accuracy, content, grammar and style. This is a competitive field; however, the growth of online publications and services is spurring the demand for writers and editors, especially those with Web experience.

Desktop publisher
Desktop publishers use computer software to format and combine text, images, charts and other visual elements to produce publication-ready material. Duties of this fast-growing profession include writing and editing text, creating graphics, converting photos and drawings into digital images, designing page layouts and developing presentations.

Data entry clerk
Like administrative assistants, job prospects should be best for those with expertise in computer software applications. By typing text, entering data into a computer, and performing other clerical duties, these workers ensure companies keep up with information and technology.

Insurance underwriter
Insurance underwriters serve as the main link between the insurance carrier and the insurance agent. Underwriters analyze insurance applications, calculate the risk of loss from policyholders, decide whether to issue the policy and establish appropriate premium rates.

Market research analyst
Market Research Analysts gather data on competitors and analyze prices, sales, and methods of marketing and distribution. They often design surveys, compile and evaluate the data and make recommendations to their client or employer based upon their findings.

Paralegal
While lawyers assume ultimate responsibility for legal work, much of their work is delegated to paralegals. Paralegals not only assist in preparation for closings, hearings, trials, and corporate meetings, they also perform a number of other vital functions including draft contracts, mortgages, separation agreements, trust instruments and may assist in preparing tax returns and planning estates.

If you want to make the case to a potential employer or your boss to let you work from home, keep a few things in mind. If possible, provide concrete examples of how this arrangement was successful in the past or how it will succeed.

Suggest that you ease into it — spending a few days to a few weeks in the office at the outset, meeting people and getting to know procedures. Then, during the first three to six months on the new job, make frequent visits.
