Music licensing in film is a great extra income stream for you as an independent artist. But, as with any other aspect of the music industry that must go through the learning curve and the process of networking. My experience with film licensing, as everything revolves around you know.

Your name (or tenth) licensing deal probably will not be the next Hollywood blockbuster, but that’s okay. There is a tas independent films need and want your music. No, you will not be immediately rich and famous, to have a song in an indie film, but is likely to get paid, and get some good exposure. Remember, a good career Ling is not built on success. It is built on a series of small projects and successes in building of the largest, and, of course, multiple streams of income.

In this spirit, independent films are an excellent place to start. Why Where to begin? Well, listing sites like Versus Media, Film Music Network, and taxis are a good place to start, but it is difficult to have regular income people do not know. Also, something I learned recently of a couple of music supervisors, is that tracking of your package is not necessary, nor particularly appreciated. So you’re actually with your package and your music out in the stack. However, registration services give you access to projects that could not otherwise know way. They are a good investment.

An even better to connect in independent films is to go out and meet film people. As musicians, we tend to stagnate in our little world. To go out with musicians, going to music workshops and events, etc. You must bring your product to people in need instead of waiting until they come you.

A good place to start is Indie Club. This is a worldwide organization of independent filmmakers, actors, crew and everybody. Find your local chapter through the website IndieClub.com. It’s free to join. Location: San Francisco, we have the largest chapter in the country. Join the discussion list and presented as a music artist. Go to their meetings and talks. When I went to my first Indie Club meeting, I was one of the artists in the music room. Shouts from “We need you!” not only the voices in my head (this time). This room full of independent filmmakers was looking for good music that could license and still stay within your budget.

I got my first license agreement for an hour. Two songs in the same movie, which I had written, and the other to be written specifically for the film. My tactic was simple. Ask them about their coming to see where they fit this data filmmaker, I said no could find a particular piece this time it worked. I said I would be happy to custom write for him. And there was. I was paid to write before a song. How? I received $ 100 for the new piece, $ 50 for those already written and recorded. As I said, will not become rich off them. But hey, $ 50 to let him use a song that had paid money for a long time is free for me.

For the new song, the director arranged for recording time in the local recording arts school where his sound editor was studying. This was fortuitous, and not necessarily normal. Most others, I have to record. Because I stayed copyright of the song (you should always try to do), I was able to publish the new song in one of my future CDs, which has more money in my pocket. There are still multiple revenue streams. And Topper, I was able to make the Prime Minister and sell more CDs there. I have all this to show a meeting and talking with people. I made a few transactions in other This meeting also.

So the moral of the story is going to where the filmmakers and talk to them. Furthermore Indie Club, I’m sure enjoy your songs in movies in no time!
